Năm 1971, kỹ sư điện Leon Chua đưa ra giả thuyết rằng ngoài điện trở, tụ điện và cuộn cảm, phải tồn tại một thành phần cơ bản thứ tư của điện toán. Ông gọi nó là memristor, ghép từ “memory” (bộ nhớ) và “resistor” (điện trở). Đến năm 2008, memristor mới chính thức được tạo ra, mở ra con đường cho điện toán thần kinh loại máy tính hoạt động giống não người. Điểm đặc biệt của memristor là vừa có thể lưu trữ dữ liệu, vừa xử lý thông tin tại chỗ, giống như cách các khớp thần kinh...
