Vào tháng 4/1861, Richard Jordan Gatling chứng kiến hàng trăm binh lính Liên bang diễu hành qua Indianapolis, chuẩn bị ra tiền tuyến. Ông cũng thấy dòng người bị thương không ngừng đổ về, chưa kể những người đã mất mạng. Điều này thôi thúc ông phát minh ra một thiết bị có thể giảm số lượng binh sĩ tham chiến, qua đó giảm thương vong. Trong suốt mùa hè năm 1861, Gatling chế tạo khẩu súng mang tên mình.
