Cụ thể, vào lúc 20h27 ngày 2-12 tại Trường bắn quốc gia khu vực 3 (xã Xuân Tâm, huyện Xuân Lộc, tỉnh Đồng Nai), trong quá trình thực hiện nhiệm vụ vận chuyển thuốc nổ ra vị trí tập kết thì trời mưa to, sấm sét, tổ công tác gồm một số quân nhân thuộc Tiểu đoàn 17, Sư đoàn 5, Quân khu 7 tạm dừng, nghỉ giải lao. Đột nhiên, khối thuốc nổ phát nổ làm nhiều quân nhân thương vong.
